They were plantation owners or Perkeniers of the Perk\u2019s <b>Matelenco<\/b> and <b>Spantje Bji<\/b> from 1794 until 1904.<\/p><section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9d3f80c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9d3f80c\" data-element_type=\"section\"><div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\"><div class=\"elementor-row\"><div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-93140b8\" data-id=\"93140b8\" data-element_type=\"column\"><div class=\"elementor-column-wrap elementor-element-populated\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\"><div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d6835ec elementor-drop-cap-yes elementor-drop-cap-view-default elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d6835ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;drop_cap&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><div><p><b>Evert Coenrardsz Herrebrugh<\/b> was the first of the Herrebrugh\u2019s that came to the Banda Islands circa 1794. This was shortly before the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210622234127\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_East_India_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>VOC, the Dutch East India Company<\/strong><\/a>, that held the Nutmeg monopoly, went bankrupt.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8206adb elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8206adb\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5022d2a\" data-id=\"5022d2a\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b25fd38 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b25fd38\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<section data-id=\"97b5407\" data-element_type=\"section\"><div><div><div data-id=\"526b399\" data-element_type=\"column\"><div><div><div data-id=\"09ac980\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div><div><div data-id=\"d7efbde\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div>In 1772 \u2013\u00a0<b>Coenraad Herrebrugh (Herbrug)<\/b> (1723-1775) and his wife <b>Margareta (born Wimmers)<\/b> (1735-1775) had a son in\u00a0Amsterdam,\u00a0<strong>Evert Coenrardsz Herrebrugh<\/strong> (1772-1809).<br \/><br \/><\/div><\/div><div data-id=\"7132f56\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div><div><p>In 1775 \u2013 both Coenraad and Margareta die leaving son <b>Evert <\/b>age 3.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1778 \u2013 Gunung Api erupts, an earthquake strikes, tidal waves and a hurricane hit. The islands were destroyed, perkeniers go bankrupt.<\/p><p>Around 1790, <b>Evert Coenrardsz Herrebrugh<\/b>\u00a0first came to the Banda Islands from Amsterdam. In 1794, at age 22,\u00a0he\u00a0marries <b>Elisabeth Leunissen <\/b>in Banda Naira. They establish the nutmeg perk \u201c<b>M<\/b><b>atalenco<\/b>&#8221; (Matalenko) on the island of Ai (Ay). Colonists were enticed to become Nutmeg plantation operators if they vowed to remain there forever.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1795 \u2013 The VOC goes bankrupt.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1796 \u2013 The Dutch yield the islands to the English so not to be taken by\u00a0the French during the Napoleonic Era.<\/p><\/div><div><p>1796 \u2013 Evert and Elisabeth have a son <strong>Evert Evertsz Herrebrugh (I)<\/strong> (1796 \u2013 1862)<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1803 \u2013 Banda is back in Dutch control and they began to recruit\u00a0new civil administrators to replace the defunct\u00a0VOC as the new NHM (Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij)<\/p><p>1809 \u2013 <strong>Evert Coenrardsz Herrebrugh<\/strong> dies at age 37.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">From 1810 through 1817 Banda is back to English occupation\u00a0under Captain<br \/>Cole. A hurricane struck in 1815 followed by two big\u00a0earthquakes in<br \/>1816 and 1820. In 1817 Banda goes back to Dutch control. Perkeniers lead<br \/>lavish lifestyles and assume heavy debt.<\/p><p>In 1821 \u2013<strong> Evert Evertsz Herrebrugh (I)<\/strong> (1796-1862) at age 25 marries\u00a0<strong>Geertruida Carolina Hartog<\/strong> in Banda.\u00a0 He becomes the perkenier of the perk \u201cSpantjebij\u201d in Lonthor on the Big Island of Banda. He was a member of the \u201cCouncil of\u00a0Justice\u201d. They had 7 known children.<\/p><p>In 1828 \u2013 Evert and Geertruida have a son, <strong>Evert Evertsz Herrebrugh (II<\/strong>) (1828-1869).<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1845 \u2013 Dutch give perkeniers titles to their perks and are now independently owned.<\/p><p>1849 \u2013 At age 21, <strong>Evert <\/strong><strong><strong> Evertsz Herrebrugh (II<\/strong>) (1828-1869)<\/strong> marries <strong>Johanna Maria Charlotte Vermeer<\/strong>.<\/p><p>1850 \u2013 They have their first child,\u00a0<strong>Andries Michiel Herrebrugh<\/strong> (1850 \u2013 1922) (My great-grandfather)<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1852 \u2013 Tidal Wave \/ 1854 \u2013 Earthquakes \/ 1856 \u2013 Fire in Banda Naira<br \/>1859 \u2013 Charities from a far reduce debts of perkeniers.<br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">1860 \u2013 Abolition of slavery.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>1862 \u2013 At age 66, <strong>Evert Evertsz Herrebrugh (I)<\/strong> dies in Banda.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">1864 \u2013 Termination of Spice Monopoly.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>1869 \u2013 At age 41, <strong>Evert Evertsz Herrebrugh (II)<\/strong> dies in Banda.<\/p><p>1870 \u2013 <strong>Andries Michiel Herrebrugh<\/strong>, at age 20 marries,\u00a0<strong>Emelijn Bernardina Strubij\/y<\/strong> (1850-1887) in Banda.<\/p><figure style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/herrebrugh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/img617-150x150-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"228\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The gate to the Perk Metalenco still stands!<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>1875 \u2013\u00a0 <strong>Andries\u00a0<\/strong>opens independent \u201cSpecery Land Matalenco\u201d on Ai.<\/p><div data-id=\"0e7b895\" data-element_type=\"column\"><div><div><div data-id=\"045b2ed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\"><div><div>\u00a0Andries and Emelijn have 8 children:<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u2022 1876 \u2013 Floris Evert (1876-1920)<br \/>\u2022 1877 \u2013 Ferdinand (1877-1963)<br \/>\u2022 1880 \u2013 Oscar (1880-1949)<br \/>\u2022 1882 \u2013 Evert Valentin (1882-1949)<br \/>\u2022 1884 \u2013 Michiel Hendrik (1884-1937)<br \/>\u2022 1885 \u2013 Emelijn Michelien (1885-1965)<br \/>\u2022 1887 \u2013 Jacobus Johannes Bernardus Josephus (1887-1945)<\/p><p>1887 \u2013 <strong>Emelijn Bernardina Strubij\/y<\/strong> dies at age 36 in Banda.<\/p><p>1889 \u2013 At age 39, <strong>Andries<\/strong>\u00a0marries\u00a02nd wife <strong>Anna Constance Theodorusz<\/strong> (1850-1916) (My great-grandmother) in Banda.<\/p><p>1890 \u2013 Andries and Anna have a son:<br \/><strong>Louis Reynard Herrebrugh<\/strong> (1890-1915) (My grandfather) in Banda.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1904 \u2013 The perks were still debt laden and had to be sold to N.V. Kok,\u00a0a Chinese family buying perks competing against the NHM.<\/p><p>In 1908 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Louis Reynard Herrebrugh<\/strong>\u00a0moves to Ulee Lheue, Banda Aceh, Northern Sumatra as the Plantations were lost and becomes a Customs Officer.<\/p><p>In 1914 \u2013 Louis marries <b>Anna Minke Teffer <\/b>(1889-1995) (My grandmother) in Banda Aceh, Sumatra.<\/p><p>In Nov 1914 \u2013 Louis and Anna have a daughter, <b>Constance Anna Herrebrugh<\/b> (1914-1995) (My mother) in Ulee Lheue, Banda Aceh.<\/p><p>In Dec 1915 \u2013 <strong>Louis Herrebrugh<\/strong> dies at age of 25 of Cholera in Ulee Lheue. <b>Anna Minke<\/b> was pregnant at the time.<\/p><p>July 1916 \u2013 <b>Anna Minke<\/b> gives birth to son, <b>Mattheus Thomas (Thijs) Herrebrugh<\/b> (1916-1976) in Soekaboemi, W. Java<\/p><p>1916 \u2013 <b>Anna Constance Theodorusz <\/b>(1850-1916) (Great-Grandmother) dies at 66.<\/p><p>1917 \u2013 <b>Anna Minke<\/b> remarries Louis\u2019s half-brother <b>Jacobus Johannes Bernardus <\/b><b>Josephus Herrebrugh <\/b>(1887-1945)<\/p><p>1922 \u2013 <b>Andries Herrebrugh<\/b> dies in Semarang at age 72.<\/p><p>1945 \u2013 <b>Jacobus <\/b><b>Herrebrugh<\/b> dies at age 58.<\/p><p>1958 \u2013 The nationalization of Indonesia converted the ownership of the perks to the Indonesian state.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Timeline of the Herrebrugh family in The Banda Islands of Indonesia.
